민주화운동기념사업회 Korea Democracy Foundation
The project was created for the opening of the Democracy and Human Rights Memorial Hall, hosted by the Korea Democracy Foundation. The initiative reflects on issues of state violence and human rights violations, translating the core values of democracy into a compelling visual language.
Rooted in the etymological meaning of democracy—that sovereign power resides with the people—the work draws deeply upon the sacrifices made throughout modern Korean history. The design concept divides the narrative of Korean democracy into two companion posters: 'Min (民, the People)' and 'Ju (主, Sovereign Power)'. The narrow windows of the former Namyeong-dong interrogation facility symbolize oppressive state violence, while cracked concrete walls embody the enduring resilience and will of the people resisting it.
